Silverstone (Rounds 7 & 8)

I came back from my honeymoon recovering from food poisoning and went straight to the Silverstone circuit for rounds 7 and 8 of the BTCC. An enormous part of racing is getting into the right frame of mind but with so many other distractions on the run up to Silverstone I didn't manage to get my mind in tune all weekend.

I was actually looking forward to Silverstone as changes we had made at Thruxton appeared to rid the car of its tendency to snap over-steer in fast corners. However, at Silverstone I was struggling with under-steer through the many slow corners and so we put the toe out back on the rear of the car. However, we now have threaded toe out adjusters on the rear suspension which is a huge improvement over the previous 'bolt in slot' arrangement which was easily disturbed by a ride over the curbs.

I didn't really get on the pace all weekend though I was reasonably well placed for the feature race. I made mistakes and spun in both races - unforgivable at this level of racing. In the feature race I fluffed a gear change going into maggots and whilst I held the ensuing slide, the front wheels just dropped into the gravel trap. I beckoned the marshalls over to push me out but it had cost me 35 seconds. I worked really hard to close the gap on the rest of the field. I caught Steve Woods in the Mitsubishi and then finally passed Tom Boardman on the last corner to finish 6th.
